Paris, je t'aime

I have a lot of photos that I wanted to share on this blog, but somehow didn't. So, I said, "why not start with Paris!"

As I did my master's degree in Lille which is 1 hour away from Paris, I found the chance to visit it several times. But the best times I had in Paris was in February with my friends who came from Italy and in June with my mom. Especially the trip with mom was perfect, since instead of eating cheap sandwiches and walking on foot a lot, we did shop and wine and dine with her. Among all the things I love about Paris, here are my favorite places:

Malum yüksek lisansı Paris'in 1 saat uzağında yapınca, Paris'e gidip gidip geldim ben de fırsatları kaçırmadan.

1. Notre-Dame de Paris

I confessed my love to Notre-Dame de Paris before in this post, for me it's the most beautiful building in Paris, and perhaps in the world. I have to go there every single time I visit Paris and every time I become mesmerized by its beauty. The last time I was there it was during a ceremony and my love for it became even stronger after it. Notre-Dame is really the most fascinating place for me.

2. Sacré-Coeur

Sacré-Coeur raises on the hills of Paris among old cobblestoned streets and small boutiques and for me it's the jewel of Paris. Maybe the Eiffel tower has the reputation, but Sacré-Coeur is the heart of Paris with its white embroidered façade and the gorgeous Paris view you can see from there. And oh the boutiques... They are all full of little marvels, but can easily leave you empty-handed.

Sacré-Coeur, Paris'in tepelerinde Montmartre'da küçük butikler ve arnavut kaldırımlı sokakların tepesinden yükselir ve bence Paris'in incisidir. Eiffel Kulesi'nin adı olsa da, Paris'in asıl simgesi olabilir, hatta olmalıdır.

3. La Tour Eiffel

To tell you the truth I don't really love Eiffel, after all it's just a giant weird thing made of iron. I did take postcard-like photos there though (well, what to say I can be your typical tourist sometimes).

4. Père Lachaise

I wanted to go to the Père Lachaise cemetery for some time, so I took my friends there. The cemetery is enormous and filled with beautiful sculptures and mausoleums. The difference of Lachaise from other European cemeteries is the fact that almost every celebrity is buried there; Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf, Oscar Wilde, Chopin... You name it, they have it :) My favorite tomb is the kissing grave of Oscar Wilde with a beautiful winged sculpture where everyone leaves a little kiss. It is definitely a must-see if you ever go to Paris.

Herkes burada valla. Favori mezarım ise (öyle bir şey olabilirse eğer) Oscar Wilde'ın herkesin birer öpücük bıraktığı mezarı. Yolunuz Paris'e düşerse uzak falan demeyin muhakkak gidin.

6. Le reste

For me, Paris doesn't really mean Eiffel, Notre-Dame or Louvre, it means wine, food and shopping. I experienced two very different Paris, one with friends eating home-made sandwiches and going on foot everywhere and one with my mom going to fine restaurants and having lots of coffee and crepes stops :)

These last two photos of from where I stayed with my mom in Paris. For people who are looking for an affordable yet nice and clean place in Paris, I strongly recommend Namdemun. It's a hostel, but as you can see, it has a private room (or better a private cabin!), breakfast and dinner included in the price and wonderful hosts. And as a bonus, they have this cutie named Kuggle.

Burası annemle kaldığımız odanın kapısı. Paris'te uygun fiyata, böcekli, fareli olmayan yer isteyenler için (Paris'in otelleri malum), Namdemun'u öneririm.

Photography Fridays- The Great Painters' Autopsy

MASP School of Arts in Sao Paolo, Brazil found a great way to promote his teachings and contacted the DDB to create this interesting campaign. Here we are the inner worlds of Van Gogh, Dali and Picasso...

My World via Images #2

Since my world was full of my dissertation lately, the images of this post is heavily dedicated to Godard and to the cinema. I hope to turn to normal soon, but here are the images I've been seeing lately:

A great portrait of Antonin Artaud, a french play writer, theatre director, poet and thinker who influenced many great artists like Godard (surprise, surprise!), Jim Morrison and Charles Bukowski.

Fransız oyun yazarı, tiyatro yönetmeni, şair ve düşünür Antonin Artaud'un muhteşem bir portresi. Kendisi deneysel tiyatro anlayışıyla, Godard (konuyu bir yerden Godard'a bağlayacağımı tahmin ettiniz değil mi?), Jim Morrison ve Charles Bukowski gibi sayısız 21. yüzyıl sanatçısına ilham olmuş, şahsına münhasır bir kişilikti (erken gitti, R.I.P.)

Another Godard influenced picture, Anne Waziemsky (Godard's second wife) in her debut film Au hazard Balthazar by Robert Bresson. By the way, don't you think it's curious that Godard's 3 wife all are named Anna/Anne? (Anna Karina, Anne Waziemsky and Anne-Marie Miéville that is)

The cover photo of my dissertation thesis, Joseph feeling the little Jesus inside Mary's stomach, from Je vous salue, Marie (Hail Mary), a film by Jean-Luc Godard of course.

Tezimin kapak fotoğrafı, Meryem'in karnı aracılığıyla küçük İsa'ya dokunan Joseph, Je vous Salue, Marie, tabii ki bir Jean-Luc Godard filmi.

The face I imagine Godard has when I don't do as much work as it's necessary. It means: "Zeynep, quit slacking and go work!"

Yeterince çalışma yapmadığım günlerde Godard'ın takındığını hayal ettiğim surat ifadesi, anlamı: "Zeynep, oyalanmayı bırak otur çalış!"

Our little Rory from Gilmore Girls has grown up (the thought I have since I saw her on Mad Men).

Küçük Rory'miz büyümüş (onu Mad Men'de gördüğümden beri aklımdan çıkmayan babaanne ifadesi)

via buzz feed

A classic, the shooting of the MGM's opening sequence, poor camera crew :)

Klasik bir fotoğraf, MGM'in açılış jeneriği çekimleri, zavallı kamera ekibi :)

Now, the cutest, most romantic thing ever to finish this list, and guess what I find a postcard of that in Paris!

The postcard/ Kartpostal (Even more beautiful than the photo / fotoğraftan daha da güzel değil mi?)

Summertime!

I don't know about your city but it's definitely summertime in Lille. What can I do to celebrate it other than wearing pretty dresses, taking semi-peeping tom photos of lovers and listening to summertime...

Photography Fridays: Dear Photograph

This week, I want to talk about the documentary aspect of photography, instead of aesthetics. When we put the aesthetics aside, every photograph, even the stage-one shot in a studio, is a witness to its time. Today, we learn most of the things about the last 100 years from photographs; big events and historical people, but also the fashion, living and cities of the time... Thus, when a photograph ages, it gains nostalgic value, as well as artistic and documentary-ones. Opposite of what Walter Benjamin suggests, the years that pass construct the photograph's aura.

Walter Benjamin'in savunduğunun aksine, geçen yıllar fotoğrafın aurasını oluşturuyor.

Dear Photograph, the site I want to talk about today emphasizes this aspect of photography. You take an old photo in your hand and stand where the photo was taken. By this way, the new photograph includes many years and interesting stories.

Here are some of the photos on the site:

İşte bazı fotoğraflar:
