Photography Fridays: Dear Photograph

This week, I want to talk about the documentary aspect of photography, instead of aesthetics. When we put the aesthetics aside, every photograph, even the stage-one shot in a studio, is a witness to its time. Today, we learn most of the things about the last 100 years from photographs; big events and historical people, but also the fashion, living and cities of the time... Thus, when a photograph ages, it gains nostalgic value, as well as artistic and documentary-ones. Opposite of what Walter Benjamin suggests, the years that pass construct the photograph's aura.

Walter Benjamin'in savunduğunun aksine, geçen yıllar fotoğrafın aurasını oluşturuyor.

Dear Photograph, the site I want to talk about today emphasizes this aspect of photography. You take an old photo in your hand and stand where the photo was taken. By this way, the new photograph includes many years and interesting stories.

Here are some of the photos on the site:

İşte bazı fotoğraflar:

La-Edri Second Hand

Yeni Yıl Şarkısı/New Year Song

As I don't like New Year celebrations a bit, I wasn't thinking of writing a New Year post, but since I listened to this song yesterday at the radio, I must have put it in the blog before I forgot, so Patricia Kaas sings "He talks of love, it's like he's talking about cars" or the real name "That Guy of Mine"

Le Vent Nous Portera- The Wind Will Carry Us

Today I had to settle with my cellphone's radio since my mp3player's battery was dead. I listen to 'Le Vent Nous Portera' which I loved a lot at the time first in the morning and than in the afternoon, so I has to put it in the blog. What a beautiful video, isn't it?

Noir Désir - Le Vent Nous Portera

Here is the English translation

I'm not scared of the road
We should see, must taste
From meander in the hollow of your breast
And there everything will be OK
The wind will carry us
Your message to Ursa Major ******
And the trajectory of your race
An instant of velvet
Even if it's not useful though
The wind will take it away
Everything will disappear but
The wind will carry us
The caress and the grapeshot
And that wound that tears us appart
The palace of everyday
From yesterday and tomorow
The wind will carry them
The genetic in shoulder-belt
Chromosom in the atmosphere
Taxis for galaxies
And my flying carpet says ?
The wind will take it away
Everything will disappear but
The wind will carry us
This perfume of our dead years
What can knock at your door
Infinity of destinies
We lay some but what do we retain?
The wind will take it away
During the tide rises
And everyone is doing its accounts
I take in the hollow of your shadow
Dusts of you
The wind will carry them
Everything will disappear but
The wind will carry us

Sene 1974, Sean Connery Salacak'ta Koyunlarla/ The Year is 1974 and Sean Connery is between sheep in Istanbul

Yanlış okumadınız efendim, bugün kütüphanede arşiv tararken bulduğum bu fotoğrafı size de göstermeden edemedim. Sean Connery bir kısmı Türkiye'de çekilen "Murder on the Orient Express" filmi için Salacak'ta. Yanındaki koyunlar ne alaka onu çözemedim. Süper değil mi?

You didn't read it wrong, it's really Sean Connery in 1974, in the set of the film "Murder on the Orient Express" in Istanbul. I didn't know about the sheep though. Isn't it a perfect find? I found it on the library (yes they exist still!) looking for resources for the project I'm working for and couldn't help to share it with you.

There is no need to talk much about Marilyn Monroe, it's enough to say that she is the biggest woman idol of the world. The first of June is her birthday, so let's have a post about her, shall we?

I just watched 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes', no matter how many times I watched it before, it never goes boring, first it's a musical, then it has Marilyn, Jane Russell and diamonds... I loved Jane Russell better in this movie, I saw one more time that my tastes stayed the same, even though gentlemen prefer blondes, I always prefer a brunette. The only thing I don't like about Marilyn is her talking voice, she sings beautifully, but I cannot stand her voice when she talks, if I were a guy, I think I couldn't stand to be with her for a long time, no matter how breathtaking she looks.

Neyse, hadi kapalı Pazar gününde biraz gözümüz gönlümüz açılsın...

Let's have our eyes feast for a while...

Digiturk'te bu ay gösterilecek Monroe filmleri: Erkekler Sarışın Sever (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes), Gel Sevişelim (Let's Make Love), Otobüs Durağı (Bus Stop), Sahne Aşıkları (There is no Business Like Show Business), Uygunsuzlar (The Misfits).

A Turkish digital platform (kinda like satelite, makes this month Monroe month, oh yeah lucky me!

Last night, when I couldn't sleep, I watched "Julie & Julia"

For some unknown reason, Turkish critics didn't love this movie (yes, they are all snobs). The only thing I can say is if you love at least one of the things below, you'll love this movie too; a) cooking & eating, b) Meryl Streep, c)50's Paris...Well, what a coincidence, these are all my favorite things! So, I had no choice but to love it. It was very entertaining, the only thing left for me to do now is to put 40's and 50's real king Nat King Cole in this weeks 'Musical Wednesday' and order Julie Child's 'Mastering the French Cooking' from Amazon...

Tabii ki 'Unforgettable'...

Of course, 'Unforgettable'...

'Fly Me to the Moon'suz bu yazı olmazdı diye düşündüm... İyi eğlenceler...

I couldn't leave 'Fly Me to the Moon' out of this post either... Have fun....

This is, the traditional Musical Wednesdays part of the blog has a special guest. Maybe you can't understand the lyrics or the music seems unfamiliar to you if you aren't Turkish, but listen her special voice for once. Müzeyyen Senar- Kimseye Etmem Şikayet (I complain to no one)...

Darjeeling Limited'in soundtrack'inden Pter Sarstedt- Where do you go to my lovely...

We talked a lot about films today, so it's only appropriate that we will have a soundtrack in 'Musical Wednesdays' today. Here you go; Pter Sarstedt- Where do you go to my lovely, from Darjeeling Limited....

These two videos below are 'Hotel Chevalier'; the short film that Wes Anderson shot to be shown before the screening of 'Darjeeling Limited and makes a lot of references to the film. It tells the story of Jack (Peter Schwarzmann) and his ex-wife and is 12 minutes long. Don't miss it if you want to see Nathalie Portman naked :P

Müzikli Çarşambalar/ Musical Wednesdays- Janis Joplin

Müzikli Çarşambalar'ı unuttum sanmayın, bir if'e gittim geldim (Gondry'nin belgeselini niye muhtemelen sadece benim sevdiğimi başka bir post'a saklıyorum).

Don't think that I forgot this week's 'Musical Wednesdays', I just went to the film festival (I will tell later why probably I am the only-one who loved Gondry's latest documentary 'The Thorn in the Heart'). This week's musical obsession of mine is Janis Joplin's Mercedes Benz. I listened this a hundred times this week (well, most of the time, I do only listen to one song or singer for a whole week, you know).
