Sao Paolo, Brezilya'daki MASP sanat okulu reklamını yapmak için oldukça yaratıcı bir yol bulmuş ve DDB ajansından çarpıcı bir kampanya istemiş. Sonuçlarsa oldukça ilginç, işte karşımızda Van Gogh, Dali ve Picasso'nun iç dünyaları....
I saw this street band many times, but I really discovered them because of my boyfriend who is in love with the santur. The band is form when two travellers (an Israili singer and a French guitarist) met in 2009 and decided to come to Istanbul and start a band. In 2010, the Turkish santur player joined them and since then, Light in Babylon performs on European festivals as well as the Istiklal Street in Istanbul. If you love them, you can buy their album worldwide via their website, and if you're ever in Istanbul, you should definitely check them out.
Bu grubu daha önce İstiklal'de dinlemiş olsam da, kendilerine asıl ilgim santur aşığı sevdiceğim sayesinde oldu. Biri İsrail, diğeri Fransız iki gezginin 2009'daki tanışmasının ardından, 2010 yılında kurulan grup, yanına santur çalan Metehan Çiftçi'yi de alıp Light in Babylon'u kuruyor ve İstiklal Caddesi'nin yanı sıra Avrupa'nın çeşitli yerlerinde de çalmaya başlıyorlar. I always love love love a good one hit wonder. A new song emerges, everyone's in love with it, then we never hear from the singer/band again, maybe they get married, maybe they turn to their day jobs, but they can never be hit again (and we know sometimes they try). There are great one hit wonders in history, like Final Countdown, Funky Town and my personal favorite Mickey, but because they were hits in my youth, I love the one hit wonders from the 1990's and 2000's the most. So here is my top ten, feel free to add yours :)

1. Aqua- Barbie Girl
Okay, maybe I exaggerated a little bit putting it to the number one spot, but damn that was a great song, the high pitched voice of Barbie, the weird heirdo of Soren, the ambiance. I think it's a shame to the music history that we didn't get more from Aqua and I blame the bald Ken for it (and the fact that Barbie is not blonde of course is a very bold move)!
Tamam, bu şarkıyı bir numaraya koyarak biraz abarttığımı kabul edebilirim, fakat tam olarak değeri bilinmese de bunun çok iyi bir şarkı olduğunu iddia ediyorum ve hatta diyorum ki Aqua'nın başka şarkı yapmaması müzik endüstrisi için ciddi bir kayıptır! 2. Alien Ant Farm- Smooth Criminal
I never have been a Jackson fan (oh, shame on me I know), but this song was a killer. So why couldn't they really make it. After all, they had a cool name, a good first hit and they even had a monkey on their video. When I look at it, I really think that a bad hairdo can ruin your career and if you form a band, don't take a fat guy in. But I wish they covered all the M.J. songs, they could make a good Billie Jean cover.
Ne kadar ayıp olsa da, utanmadan burada açıklıyorum ki ben asla bir Michael Jackson hayranı olmadım, ama bu şarkı gerçekten muhteşem bir cover. Düşününce Alien Ant Farm'ın neden ünlü olamadıklarını anlamakta zorlanıyorum, sonuçta kendilerine süper bir ad bulmuşlar, ilk şarkıları en çok dinlenen parçalardan olmuş, üstelik kliplerinde maymun bile var. Yine de onlardan bir Billie Jean cover'ı dinlemek hiç de fena olmazdı bence.
3. New Radicals- You Get What You Give
I really don't know why they didn't make it, the song was cute, the video was cheery and cute, the guy was cute. Too much cuteness maybe, who knows?
Bu grubun neden tutmadığını gerçekten anlamıyorum, şarkı tatlıydı, klip tatlıydı, çocuk tatlıydı. Çok fazla tatlılıktan olabilir mi dersiniz?
4. American Hi-fi - Flavor of the Week
I still listened to this one. It was a great song and the band actually did make albums later on, but they never really had another hit (if I don't miss it completely). I loved the sound, the song, but what I loved the most was the lyrics, "Her boyfriend he don't know, anything about her, he's too stoned Nintendo....". Wait a minute I see it know, it's the spelling that killed them!
Ben bu şarkıyı hala dinliyorum. Sıkı şarkıydı ve grup aslında bir kaç albüm daha yaptı ama asla bu şarkının ününe ulaşamadılar. Şarkı ve tarzları güzeldi ama bu şarkının en baba yanı sözleri: "Her boyfriend he don't know, anything about her, he's too stoned Nintendo...."
5. Wheatus- Teenage Dirtbag
Here is a shocker again, how could we lost Wheatus? The song was cute + loser was a sickly cute movie and the singer can both sing male and female parts! Just imagine to have ultimate duets with just one singer, like a dream coming true. There are a few factors why Wheatus didn't make it if you ask me, most importantly there is a serious fashion crime in this video with awful hats, the voice of the singer is too high pitched to be a male voice and he got blinding white teeth which scare me a lot. Nevertheless a great song for every teenage losers out there.
Wheatus'un tutmamasına da inanmakta zorlanıyorum. Şarkı çok şekerdi ve "Loser" fazlaca şeker bir filmdi, ayrıca solist şarkının hem kadın hem erkek bölümlerini söyleyebiliyor, daha ne isteriz? Düşünün ki Wheatus tutsaydı, 10 yıldır tek adam tarafından söylenen düetler dinliyor olabilirdik. Bence Wheatus'ın tutmamasının bir kaç nedeni var, bunların en önemlisi kuşkusuz klipte çılgın şapkalarla modanın katlediliyor oluşu. Ayrıca adamın şarkının kadın kısmındaki ipince sesi beni biraz tıstırmıyor da değil hani. Yine de müzik dünyası böylece yıllarca eziklerin dinleyebileceği bir şarkı kazanmış oldu.
6. Joan Osborne- One of Us
It's the hair, it's the nose piercing, no it's Joan Osborne. We have the countryish God conscious, humanitarian One of Us on the 6th spot. It was a nice song, but I never could love Joan Osborne for some reason and personally I cannot imagine having more hits by her in which she preaches us one way or another.
O bir saç, o devasa bir hızma, hayır o Joan Osborne. Listenin 6 numarasında country'imsi hümanist parça One of Us var. Aslında şarkı güzeldi ama bir anlamdan ben Osborne'un tutmamasına seviniyorum, yoksa senelerce o ya da bu konuda vaaz veren şarkılar dinleyebilirdik kendisinden gibi geliyor bana.
7. Las Ketchup- The Ketchup Song
Ah, the song that no one can sing. Beside from the fact that a band called Las Ketchup is always cool, these three beautiful women rocked the charts with their weird, cute, entertaining song 2002. To be honest, I still think that they sing in gibberish (no offense to spanish, it just seems to me that this song cannot mean something serious). We all thought it was a silly song yet we all knew the silly dance. Long story short, they didn't make it either but that was a cool song to dance for a while.... P.S.: I know that this is not the original version, but this is the one I knew and loved, so deal with it.
İşte hiçbirimizin söyleyemediği bir ketçap şarkısı (denemediğimizden değil tabii). Adlarının çok yaratıcı olması dışında, bu üç güzel kadın tuhaf, şirin ve eğlenceli şarkılarıyla 2002 yılında listeleri altüst etmişti. Her ne kadar şarkı bana ispanyolcadan çok uydurma bir dil gibi geliyor olsa da, ve her ne kadar şarkıyı dinleyen herkes bunun çok aptalca bir şarkı olduğunu düşündüyse de yine de hepimiz dansının ezbere biliyorduk. Ketçap şarkısı belki müzik tarihinin mihenk taşlarından olamadı ama bir süre hepimizi eğlendirdiği kesin.
8. Jennifer Paige- Crush
It's a wonder how this song ever made it, but she was big for a (short) while. The song is so so, the singer is the girl next door without any particular charm so it's no brainer why we didn't hear from her again. It's a cute love song though.
Doğrusunu söylemek gerekirse bu şarkının nasıl tuttuğunu anlamakta zorlanıyorum. Şarkı sıradan, ses vasat, kız çok ama çok sıradan, yani aslında Jennifer Paige'in neden tutmadığını anlamak hiç de zor değil.
9. Los Del Rio- Macarena
Oh, this song always reminds me of my screensaver with macaronis dancing the macarena ( they don't make such good screensavers anymore, it was hilarious!). No need to say much about it, everyone still remembers the dance moves and most of us still cannnot stop ourselves to do them whenever we hear the song (like me right know). And if it isn't enough, you gotta admit that the video is kinda awesome! (Maybe I need to put it on a higher spot).
Biliyor musunuz bu şarkının çıktığı yıl makarena dansı yapan makarnalarlı bir ekran koruyucum vardı (ah o ne güzel ekran koruyucuydu, oturur onu izleyip dans ederdim.) Bu şarkı hakkında çok söz söylemeye gerek yok aslında, hala herkes makarena dansının hatırlıyor ve çoğumuz bir yerde bu şarkı çalarsa hala kalkıp bu dansı yapıyoruz (benim de şu anda yaptığım gibi). Üstelik klip de saçma ötesi güzel (Belki de bu şarkıyı listede biraz yukarı koyabilirdim, evet).
10. Baha Men- Who Let the Dogs Out
I never liked this song, but I cannot stop hurling "who who who" if I ever listened to it. And it's the perfect one hit wonder, because no one on earth don't have a clue who these Baha Men are. Do you?
Aslında bu şarkıyı hiç sevemedim, ama yine de ne zaman çalsa "who who who" diye bağırmaktan kendimi alamıyorum. Ve bu şarkı tam bir tek şarkılık grup parçası örneği, ben şahsen Baha Men kimdir nedir hiç tanıyorum. Ya siz?
Bonus track: t.a.T.u.- All the Things She Said Bonus Şarkı: t.a.T.u- All the Things She Said
I put this awful song as the bonus track, because it revives my faith in the music industry. If a song is that bad, it doesn't matter if you act like a lesbian couple and kiss under the rain with school uniforms on, you still won't make it. They appeared in Eurovision and made another album, but as soon as the boys cooled their heads off, t.a.T.u was dead and erased from the music industry (thanks to the music gods!).
Bu korkunç şarkıyı bonus olarak listeye koydum çünkü bu şarkı insanın müzik endüstrisine olan inancını kuvvetlendiriyor. Şöyle ki eğer yağmur altında üniformayla şarkı söyleyen iki lezbiyen bile kötü bir şarkıyla ünlü olamıyorsa, müzik endüstrisi düşündüğümüz kadar da kötü durumda değil demektir. t.a.T.u daha sonra Eurovision'da yarıştı ve bir albüm daha yaptı, ama Tanrıya şükürler olsun ki bir daha hit bir şarkı yapamadılar.
I've never been a Batman fan myself, because let's face it, Bruce Wayne is just a rich guy with a lot of toys and no one to play with and it seems to me that he's just a tad too ambitious to wear latex and cape. But the Batman cartoon series and Tim Burton movies made me watch it until now. But with "The Dark Knight Rises", I think I also put an end to the Batman franchise all together.
Doğrusunu söylemek gerekirse hiçbir zaman öyle aman aman bir Batman hayranı olmadım, çünkü aslına bakarsak Batman bir süper kahramandan çok canı sıkılan zengin bir adam neticede ve sanırım latex ve pelerin giyme merakı onu süper kahraman olmaya itmiş (ah zavallı zenginlerin can sıkıntıları sen nelere kadirsin!) Ama çocuklukta izlediğim Batman çizgi filmleri ve Tim Burton filmleri şu ana kadar kendini izletiyordu, taa ki Christopher Nolan'ın "Kara Şövalye Yükseliyor"una kadar.
Other than being 3 hours long with no really storyline, this Batman lacks some qualities that are a must in any good super hero movies:

1. (and the most important) A cool anti-hero. So far we had Joker, the gorgeous Cat Woman (Pfeiffer, not Berry), Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy (and maybe even the Riddler). They all have super powers and a damn good reason to be just that bad. Now, we have a terrorist (American much babe?). He is ugly, he talks weird and although he have his reasons, the nemesis raises no sympathy at all, he's just obnoxious.

Şu ana kadar Batman'de Joker, Kedi Kadın (tabii ki Pfeiffer yoksa Hale Berry'nin kedi gibi davranmasına iyi diyecek halim yok), Mr. Freeze ve Poison Ivy (hatta belki Bilmececi) gibi ilginç karakterler gördük. Şimdi ise süper gücü falan olmayan, Amerikan paranoyasını oldukça besleyici bir teröristimiz var, diğer düşmanların sağlam bir hikayesi ve sempatik bir tarafları var, Bayne ise tuhaf devasa bir adam sadece.
2. Tim Burton's Batman movies all had an original style and a beautifully created Gotham City. Now we have.... a city that looks exactly like NY. No originality, no nothing.

3. Umm, where did you hid the action Nolan babe? Other than some lame fist fight (Batman fist fights, yeah right!), in the first, let's say two hours, there is no action to be seen and the rest is not much better either. At least, he could put some sexy sizzling action scene between Wayne and Cat.
3. Sevgili Nolan yavrum, aksiyonu nerelere sakladın? Bir kaç ucuz yumruk kavgası dışında filmin ilk 2 saatinde neredeyse hiç aksiyon yoktu, sonrası da daha iç açıcı değildi. Yani hiç olmazsa Wayne'le Cat arasında seksi bir kavga sahnesine kimse hayır demezdi diye düşünüyorum.
4. I appreciate Nolan's try to create a more human Batman to look behind the legend, but the scenes that are supposed to be emotional are deprived of real emotion what-so-ever and are just plain boring.
4. Her ne kadar Nolan'ın Batman efsanesini yeniden ele alıp daha insani bir karakter yaratmasına destek veriyor olsam da, filmin duygusal sahneleri derinlikten uzak sıkıcı sahnelerdi. Bir filmde bir kadının fotoğrafına kaç kez bakılabilir allah aşkına!
5. Why the hell the nice people of Gotham also follows a masked maniac with an atomic bomb? How can they really believe that he won't fry them with some nuclear love in the near future?
5. Film bence herşeyden önce inandırıcı değildi. Neden Gotham'ın iyi vatandaşları birden elinde atom bombası olan maskeli bir manyağı takip etmeye başlıyorlar? Hiç akıllarına o bombayı patlatabileceği gelmiyor mu acaba?
6. An atomic bomb falls fifty feet from the city, maybe the water is a bit destroyed, but the city is fine. Really honey? Do you mean to say that 3 generations in Hiroshima just had a very nasty skin condition and a nuclear bomb of 9 m. radius doesn't destroy the city? A very interesting and realistic ending Nolan love, kudos.
6. Filmin sonunun ne kadar yazış olduğunu tek ben mi görüyorum? Atam bombası şehrin dibine düşüyor, denizde belki biraz kirlilik olur ama şehire hiç de bir şey olmuyor. Nolan herhalde burada aslında Hiroshima'da 3 neslin sadece kötü bir cilt sorunu olduğunu ve atom bombalarının aslında dostumuz olduğunu söylemek istiyor. Çok gerçekçi ve iyi bir son Nolan yavrum, tebrikler!
7. Batman's suit is just plain ugly. Why the hell does he wear a velvet cape that is longer than Kate Middleton's wedding dress' tail? Does.... Nolan tries to tell us that there is something more special going on between Batman and Robin? For all I know, Robin's admiration for Batman is a bit much to be brotherly love.

I know that since I went to France for my master's degree, this blog had suffered a lot, but now that the dissertation thesis is written, the France is left and even a biiig vacation of one month in the beach is over, it is time for the Daughter of God and Alexandre Dumas to come back. This coming back may be slow, because there are tons of books that I read, lots of movies I saw and lots of places I visited in the meanwhile and everyone of them (well, more realistically most of them) will soon be on the blog. But for now, I want to apologize with a Wes Anderson short that I love a lot.
Malum ben Fransa'ya gittim, buralar ıssız kaldı, ama tez bitti, master'lı olundu, hatta bir aylık kocccaman bir Bodrum tatili bile yapıldı. Derim ki artık iyiden iyiye geri dönme vaktidir, hem İstanbul'a ve "gerçek" hayata hem de bloga. I cannot believe how I didn't already put this catchy weird song in my blog yet, but here is the song that I listened 20 times a day when I was writing my dissertation on Godard, Mao Mao with the montage sequence from the La Chinoise(one of his best films btw) of Godard. I'm sorry if it stays in your head for days too, but I just cannot resist to put it here.
Bu şarkıyı hala bu bloga koymadığıma inanamıyorum, çünkü kendisini tez yazarken günde en az 20 kere dinlemeden günüm iyi gitmiyordu. Mao Mao Godard'a La Chinoise'ı çekerken ulaşan ve filmde bir montaj sekansta kullandığı akla fazlasıyla yapışan tuhaf bir şarkı. The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet is the first novel of Reif Larsen. But it's much more than a book, because the novel tells the quirky genius mapmaker T.S.'s secret voyage to the Smithsonian Institute and it creates a visual road for the eye of the reader to follow. The maps that T.S. draw, the side notes and interesting anecdotes guide the eye just like it watches a movie. With this quality, the book becomes quite interesting and fun to read.
T.S. Spivet'in Seçme Eserleri Reif Larsen'in ilk romanı. Ama kendisi bir roman olmanın çok ötesinde, çünkü 12 yaşındaki dahi ve biraz da tuhaf haritacı T.S.'nin Smithsonian Enstitüsü'ne gizli gidişini anlatan roman, okurken insanın gözünü de sayfalar arasında görsel bir yolculuğa çıkarıyor. T.S.'nin çizdiği haritalar (ki bunlar aslında bizim bildiğimiz anlamda haritadan çok şemalar), yan notlar ve ilginç anektotlarla okuyucunun gözü tıpkı bir film izler gibi bir o yana bir bu yana bakıyor. Bu yönüyle kitap hem çok değişik hem de eğlenceli bir hal alıyor.

Despite the creativeness of the form of the book, the story itself unfortunately doesn't always deliver what the readers expect for and it ends with a deus ex machina in form of a family member who acts out of his usual ways just to create the ending. Some story lines and transitions can feel rushed too and as a result the book does not completely satisfy it's readers (or let's say it didn't satisfy me). To summarize it all, the book has serious structural problems, but it puts me in a world of a scientific child that is foreign to me and I think that Larsen is very successful at conveying the child's world (I cannot resist to say that it's much more successful than The Catcher in the Rye of Salinger).
Kitap şekil açısından çok yaratıcı olmasına rağmen, anlattığı hikayeler maalesef okuyucunun istediği bir şekilde bağlanmıyor, son anda yetişen ve karakterine aykırı hareket eden bir aile üyesiyle hikaye bitiriliveriyor. Bunun yanında kitapta bazı geçişlerde okuyucuyu (ya da en azından beni) yeterince tatmin edemiyor. Yani kitapta yapısal olarak ciddi sorunlar var, yine de T.S. Spivet'ı beni hiç bilmediğim ve anlamadığım bilim dünyasına soktuğu için sevdim, bunun yanında Larsen'in bir çocuğun dünyasını çok iyi anladığını da düşünüyorum (yine laf sokmadan edemeyeceğim, Salinger'ın Çavdar Tarlası Çocukları'yla karşılaştırınca, T.S.'nin ne kadar inandırıcı bir karakter olduğunu daha iyi anlıyorum).
As a last note, I need to say that as a feminist, I loved the story of T.S.'s granmother Emma's story which includes her struggle to become a scientist at the end of the 1880's very much. T.S. Spivet may not be the next masterpiece, but it merits to be read because of the novelty of it's form and some parts of the novel which portrays it's characters quite realistically.

But the song is more than that, it's for every unlawful act that the governments/people in power use to oppress others. I think music should me more like that and less like "shake your ass babe"....

Ok, so Tim Burton's 'Dark Shadows' may have nothing to do with the original t.v. series (I mean nothing at all), but at least it seems funny. I'm interested to see the Burton twist of it so to say, but until May we need to settle for the trailer. We are in the winter, the weather is horrible, we didn't see the sun in Villeneuve for a week now, to sum it up the situation doesn't look very bright from here (and on top of all that there is a rumor that snow is coming next week). In the meantime, let me introduce you my 9 quad-meters prison cell, to tell you the truth, mine is pretty good comparing to some ugly old, depressive places they call dormitories, so I won't complain much about it. After a long break here we are with 'Musical Wednesdays'. This week I'll give you 3 interpretations of an Etta James' song "Something's Got a Hold on Me". The first is of course by the goddess named Etta, the second is one of my favorite singers Beth Hart and the third interpretation was prepared for the movie Burlesque and sang by Christina Aguilera. My favorite is the version by Beth Hart even though Etta James is awesome as always and I cannot skip to say that although Christina has a powerful wonderful voice, she needs to cut the shouting a little bit, but the decision is yours, which one is your favorite?

What is she up to? Where did she go in Lille? What is happening? It's a bit true in fact, I disappeared from the blogosphere, the classes, travels, new people to meet kept me from writing to my blog, I made long lists on what to write to the blog and didn't write any, so here is a small update to you.

I said sort of because in fact where I live is called Villeneuve d'Ascq, it's a small city right outside of Lille, but Villeneuve with other cities around is in Lille Metropole, so I sort of live in Lille... (Yes, french people have a tendency to complicate things).

For some reason, I deleted the photos of my little tiny room, I'll add it asap (I have to add that I also have the smallest bathroom which I pray for everyday, I saw awful places called dormitories, so I cannot complain much about mine). But since I'm living for the first time in a dorm room, it's still something strange, thank god I live alone in the room or I would seriously loose my mind by now.
