Eski İstanbul- Old Town, the Grand Bazaar

This Thursday I went to an old Istanbul tour with my camera. I occasionally go to Sultanahmet, but I didn't go to the Grand Bazaar and the Egypt Bazaar for years, I really missed them.

First, I went to Samatya and ate a great meal at a place called Develi. Everything they make is great, but the kebab with pistachios is always my favorite....

I like Samatya a lot, it's a small old part of Istanbul and has a tiny square with old houses and restaurants. It's also famous, because the most popular Turkish series ever was shot there. The show was really a big sensation and became a sort of tradition. The shop you see in the picture was one of the main places in the show and they really burnt it for the finale of the series! (Can you believe they actually burn something for real for a tv series? Weird, huh?). It stayed burnt-out for some time, but later they reopened it.

This is the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest cowered bazaars of Turkey. It has 58 streets and hundreds of shops. The coolest thing about it that the streets and different parts of the bazaar are divided by the group of goods, so you have carpet street, jewelry street... etc. It opened in 1461. Now, it's pretty much just for tourists, but 20 years ago or so, it was still a very important shopping place for Turkish people too. The only good place left in it is the carpet shops. They still find special silk carpets coming from Iran ect...

I only liked one piece of jewelry in the whole placei and it turned out to be an antique diamond earring that costs 1000 Euros! (Well, yes  I have a very good taste)

After the Grand Bazaar, I also stopped by at the Egypt Bazaar which is a 20 minute-walk away. This bazaar used to be just for the spices, now it also has some touristic pieces, but stays mainly for spices. I really like the Egypt Bazaar better, because of its unique and incredible smell of all spices you can imagine mixed together...

This is the New Mosque, just at the exit of the Egypt Bazaar. This joint building is the special compartment for the Sultan to enter to the Mosque...

And of course, I cannot leave Eminönü without tasting my favorite kind of candy. The Ottoman Empire didn't have chocolate until I guess 19th century, but had delicious kind of candies like, of course most importantly, Turkish delight, akide şekeri (hard candy), badem ezmesi (nut pastes- kinda like marzipan)... I'm in love with the marzipans, and this is the place to get them!!! This is the original shop of the first candy-shop of the Ottoman Empire, and they reserved the original feeling of the shop.

Bu da dükkanın Osmanlı zamanındaki hali.
The shop at the Ottoman time.

 Logosunun da hastasıyım.
The original logo that they still use.

Colorful hard candies are always a good prop for a photo...

Obama çarşıya geldi ya, adam olduk. Bu inci de Mısır Çarşısı'ndan.
Obama is now also recommending shops for you, how nice of him!
