Charlie

Kaçınız fark etti bilmiyorum, ben de annem söyleyince önce hadi canım dedim ama, yakından görünce ikna oldum. Lord of the Rings'in Merry'si (annemin deyimiyle şu çocuk) Lost'un asi rockçısı Charlie, yani Dominic Monaghan. Hadi canım, yok artık, ama öyle.

I don't know if anyone noticed it already, I didn't when my mother first told me, but a closer look convinced me. Merry from The Lord of the Rings (or as my mother says "this child") is Lost's rebel rocker Charlie; Dominic Monaghan. Get out of here, but it's true.

By the way, I put the labels that I write most about at the side of the blog for easier access.

Since the film 'Le Concert' reunited me with classical music, this week's song will be from the soundtrack; Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto (Part 1 and 2 allegro moderato, op. 35) this time from Itzak Perlman as a soloist. I can't believe how I didn't hear such a good piece before, I wish that they would play it in the concert that I'll go next week. I even wish more that Itzak Perlman would be the soloist, look how fantastic he is with the violin!

I don't normally put recipes on my blog, but as we all know the summer is coming and we all need to loose a couple of pounds except for the few lucky-ones, so I want to put this recipe to help with your diet. I recovered from my sweet tooth crisis with this little cup last night. I usually turn to jell-o when I need something sweet very badly in my dieting, it doesn't have any fat in it and the whole package only has 60 calories. I couldn't find anything but sour cherry jell-o which I don't like much, so I improvised this cup. It's a total improvisation but both its looks and taste are fantastic.

Malzemeler:

Ingredients:

1 package of jell-o
1-2 piece of fruit of your choice (I used bananas, by the way, the box says that kiwi and pineapple keep the jell-o from freezing, just keep in mind)
Half a package of biscuits (I used diet-ones with oat)
1 small box of light fat-free yogurt
1-2 tablespoons of honey

Preparation:

Melt the jell-o with 250 ml boiling water, then mix it with 250 ml cold water.
Separate the jell-o into two containers. Put the biscuits that you crumbled into one half and divide them into cups or glasses (I used five cups) coming a little below half of the cup. Leave them in the refrigerator until frozen. (Because the cups have little jell-o on them, it took me only half an hour).
Get the cups from the refrigerator. Put sliced fruits and the rest of the jell-o on the cups. Remember to leave some room for the yogurt. Rest them in the refrigerator until they are frozen (Again, half an hour)
Whisk the yogurt with 1 or 2 tablespoons of honey until its lump-free and divide them into the cups and voila!

As you can see, the preparation is so easy that a child can do it, at first, the biscuit bottom seemed a little risky, but it is very tasty when it's frozen. You may also use musli instead of the biscuits. Eat the yogurt part and imagine it is whisked cream and hopefully you can get rid of your sweet tooth. I think one cup will be around 50-60 calories, so it's the same as the musli bars, but with so much more flavor in it.

Denerseniz nasıl bulduğunuzu paylaşırsanız sevinirim.

Please tell me what you think if you try this for yourself. We can always improve it together!

Yesterday (Monday) was the first day of the Istanbul Film Festival for me. I woke up very hardly and went to Taksim. The weather was a little bit chilly, but it was spring. There were only tourists and festival goers at this hours, where there is normally a ton of people that you can hardly walk.

I had to films to go yesterday, but 2 hours apart. Most of the festival goers buy tickets consecutively to get the most from the festival, but I refuse to do so. Because, most importantly I have migraines which can ruin the second film very easily for me. Secondly, because not a single festival starts the films on time, you can miss the beginning of the second film, if the film is in another theater. And another important factor is that every movie has or should have a unique atmosphere/ rhythm/ world and if you watch two films consecutively, the two combine together and you cannot get into the second film properly. Well, to cut the long story short, I went to the first film of my festival program on 11 am.

The first film was Christian Frei's documentary 'Space Tourists'. This year I really put documentary films ahead of the fictions, 4 of 10 films from the films I'll go to are documentaries. I strongly recommend those who love documentaries not to miss Christian Frei out, I watched his 'Giant Boudas' before and put him on the list of the directors to follow, so of course I didn't miss this-one when I saw it on the program.

As you can imagine, the film is about the billionaires who pay 20 million dollars to go to space. But with that, Frei put a Swedish photographer whose family's roots are in Soviet Russia as a framing device to tell the history of Russian space program and documented the people who collect the thrusters who fall down after the shuttle is once on the air and how it is sold to China to become foil.As the photographers puts it: "In this global world, you can be wrapping your sandwich in space rocket parts". The space thrusters' story and the story of the village which was formed solely for the space lunch are the interesting parts of the movie.

The film is mainly the story of American business women with Iranian origins Anousheh Ansari who is the first female space tourist. The photography is very successful and the music is well chosen. I don't normally like music on documentaries, but this time it's a very good decision and it even gave me small cinematical orgasms in the launching of the space shuttle scenes.

Before watching the film, I though that found footages would be used for the space footage. But it was shot by Ansari and very professionally too I must add. To tell you the truth Ansari turned out to be a very good D.O.P. and because she has a playful side, she played with the camera turning around in zero gravity and good scenes came out of it. The film is important because it was the first time the space travel and the space station was photographed this detailed.

Biraz arkaplan bilgisi vermek gerekirse, Gorbaçov'un 80'li yıllarda Sovyetlerin uzay programına son vermesiyle, Uzay İstasyonu'na giden mekikteki 3. boş yeri turistlere 20 milyon dolara satmaya karar veriyorlar, böylece tüm programın harcamasının yarısını bulmuş oluyorlar. Sinema sabah 11 olmasına rağmen kalabalıktı, ama bilet bulabilirseniz kaçırmayın derim.

In order to give a little bit of historical knowledge, when Gorbachov canceled the space program in the 80's, they decided to sell the third seat of the rocket going to the space station for 20 million to fund the program. In fact, it roughly covers 50 percent of the whole costs. I really recommend you to see the film, I heard the DVD is about to come out.

The second film was in 4 p.m. so I had a lot of free time to wander around. I wandered the shops aimlessly and found cool 'Flashdance' t-shirts at the end. So, yay!

The second film was the opening film of the festival 'Le Concert' (The Concert). I chose this film firstly because I liked Mihaileanu's Train de Vie (Train of Life) a lot and also to put some light films to balance the program so I won't get an head-explosion, but I didn't figure how good the film was.

The film is about Adrei Filipov who were once the most important maestro of the Bolshoi in the Soviet Russia, but was kicked out because he worked with Jews in the orchestra and who now works as a cleaner in the Bolshoi to gather his former orchestra and try to impersonate the Bolshoi in Paris' famous theater Le Chevelet. In the Soviet Russia, the manager of the Bolshoi who was also a KGB agent interrupted the concert where they were playing a very difficult piece by Tchaikovsky (if you also adored the music like me: Violin Concerto in D Major, op. 35). Filipov now has to work with the same agent to play the same concerto in Paris.

In fact, the synopsis does not seem original at all, even in La Train de Vie, gypsies running away from the Nazis did impersonate an SS Band, so the director is also familiar with the subject. But the films originality came from the fact that it also portrays the Soviet Russia and that there is a dramatical past to be unveiled at the end.

First of all, the film is hilarious, there were even scenes I missed laughing and naturally the music is quiet marvelous. The thing I appreciated most about the film is that in the final scene, the concerto was played entirely with some montage sequences about the future of the orchestra and some jokes. I think if you portray a musician or artist, to put his or her love life on the line like some tabloid (Hollywood style!) and to only put 1 minute long pieces of its art is unfair to the artist. (Frida is a very good example of how one can put the art in the film in my opinion, but especially the films about the classical music composers are usually bad that way.) I could not say that it was the movie of my life, but you should watch it if you want to have fun and listen to some good music on the side.

The thing I don't get it, in the version that we watched, the Russians were spoken French very well, and later when they went to Paris, they started to talk a crappy French which I found idiotic, but when I watched the trailer on their web-site, the Russians were speaken Russian. If we watched a French copy and they dubbed it, why is the French trailer in Russin? Or did I suddenly became  fluent of Russian and though it was French? I don't think so...

I normally listen to classical music very seldom and am a bad listener. I can't even remember the names or the composers of the pieces that I listened to a 100 times. (Let alone know what major/minor keys it has or to follow the pieces!).But I suddenly wanted to go to a classical concert that I didn't in ages. When I came home and open the computer an ad shows up in my e-mail and guess what the Moscow Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra is coming to Istanbul next week. Fate or what? Of course I'll get the tickets as soon as possible:) Also, a question to those who understand and know classical music, there are two different programs, they'll play the Swan Lake suite on Friday and Romeo and Juliet on Saturday. Since childhood I'm obsessed with everything Romeo and Juliet-related but I know for a fact that the Swan Lake is a better piece, or is it? What do you recommend?

Yeni film festivali anlarıyla Perşembe görüşmek üzere. Perşembe gününü filmi, methini çok duyduğum Pina Bausch belgeseli. Esenlikle kalın....

More festival posts to come on Thursday. The film on Thursday is the documentary about Pina Bausch 'Tanztraume' that I heard so much about. See you soon...

Maalesef İngilizce trailer yok, Fransızca bilmeyenler sadece müzikleri dinlesin.

Unfortunately I couldn't find an English trailer. Those who doesn't know French, just listen to the music.

P.S. Amma uzun yazı olmuş, okursunuz işallah.

P.S. Gosh, what a long post! I hope you'll read it.

House

Bu fotoğrafı Digiturk dergisinde görüp hasta oldum. Çok güzel promo yapmışlar, David LaChappelle'le Gregory Crewdson (ki kendisinden ileriki haftalarda muhakkak bahsedeceğim, merak etmeyiniz) arası bir fotoğraf olmuş. Cuddy'ye dikkat!

I saw this photo in a magazine and fell in love with it. It's one of the coolest promo pics I ever see, kinda between David LaChappelle and Gregory Crewsdon (don't worry, I'll talk about him soon enough in 'Photography Fridays'). Please pay extra attention to Cuddy!

Yerim seni House
