Blog'a dönüşüm şerefine bu hafta 'Fotoğraflı Cumalar'ı özel bir isime ayırdım; Selahattin Giz. Cumhuriyet'in ilk yıllarında Cumhuriyet gazetesinde fotoğrafçılığa başlayan Giz, hem haber, hem de sosyal belgesel alanında sayısız eser vermiştir. Kendisine önem vermemin nedeni, bugün 1930'lu yılların yaşayışını ancak onun fotoğraflarından öğrenebiliyor olmamız. 2000'e yakın Atatürk fotoğrafı yanında, İstanbul'un sokaklarını bir harita çıkarır gibi, sokak sokak, dükkan dükkan görüntülemiş, içindeki tipleri, dokuları ve ritüelleri teker teker yakalamıştır. Bu açıdan Selahattin Giz fotoğraflarına bakmak sizi bir zaman tüneline sokar, özellikle 'Beyoğlu:1930" kitabına baktığınızda Beyoğlu'nun keşfetmediğiniz köşesi kalmaz...
In honor of my return to the blog, I saved this week's 'Photography Fridays' for a special photographer, Selahattin Giz. He is a Turkish photographer, who started photography during the first years of the Turkish Revolution and portrayed in and outs of the area. His importance is thanks to his social documentary photography, we can have a perfect grasp on Istanbul in the 1930's, the life and the social revolution of a young Republic. 30's until the 50's are the most innovative times of Turkey, when both the laws and the social life modernized in a hasty pace after hundreds of years under the traditional Ottoman Empire. 30's are also significant, because after the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, Russia's aristocrats escaped to Istanbul and they especially have strong influences on Istanbul's nightlife.
Selahattin Giz is the photographer of this culture and thanks to his photos, you can enter a time machine with which you can wander every street and every shop of the 30's...
