Kadın Papa/The Female Pope

Bugün bir film izledim ve öğrendim ki, 13. yüzyıl tarihçilerine göre 9. yüzyılda erkek kılığına girip Papalık mekanına yükselen bir kadın varmış. Bu inanç 16 yüzyıla kadar sürmüş ve Dominikan öğretilerine girmiş, hatta tarot kartlarındaki Azize kartı Papa Joan'a itafen yapılmış ve o zamanlar bu kartın adı Kadın Papa (La Papessa) imiş, daha sonra kartın adı Azize olarak değişmiş.

I watched a film today and learned that according to 13th century chroniclers that there was a woman who disguised herself as a man and became Pope. This legend was highly believed and even appeared in the Dominican learnings until the 16th century and that the High Priestess tarot card was created after Pope Joan and it was called The Female Pope (La Papessa) at the time.

Rivayete göre (bence kesin doğrudur!) Joan (John) Anglius kendini eğitmiş bilgili bir kadın olarak sevgilisiyle birlikte Atina'ya gelir ve erkek kılığına girerek dönemin en alim hocalarından eğitim görür. Roma'ya gider ve piskopos olur. Bilgisi ve yeneteğiyle herkesin saygısını kazanan Joan sonra da Papa seçilir. Bartholomeo Platina'nın 13. yüzyılda yazdığı Papalar tarihi kitabında adı Papa John VIII olarak geçer. 2 yıl papalıkta kaldıktan sonra Joan at üstünde doğuma başlayınca kadın olduğu ortaya çıkar. Bazı tarihçiler onun doğumun hemen ardından doğal yolla öldüğünü bazıları ise bir ata bağlanıp sokaklarda halk tarafından taşlandığını söyler.

According to the legend (which I think is true) Joan (John) Anglius was an educated and clever woman who went to Athens with her lover and studied under the best lecturers dressed as a man and went to Rome. She first became bishop and got the respect of everyone with her knowledge. Then she was elected as Pope and ruled for two years. In the chronicles of Popes that Bartholomeo Platina wrote in the 13th century, she was called as Pope John VIII. During a travel, her labor started on horseback and her disguise fell. According to some sources she died from natural causes right after this, and others say that she was bounded to a horse and stoned by her own people.

16. yüzyıldan itibaren tarihçiler 'Kadın Papa'yı yalanlamaya başlanırlar ve görüldüğü üzere bunda da başarılı olurlar. Öyle ki bugün bir efsane olarak bile olsa bunu bilmiyoruz. Starting from the 16th century the historians started to deconstruct the 'Female Pope' and obviously they succeeded in that. Personally, I believed in this legend to be true, the patriarchal society who accused Jeanne D'Arc with madness and anti-christ would of course deny the existence of a female Pope. To tell you the truth, I also believe what Dan Brown also revealed as Maria Magdalena having a Bible. Of course the patriarchal order of the era wouldn't allow a female apostle, so she became a whore instead.
