Neverwhere/Yokyer- Neil Gaiman

For a long time ever I bought a bestseller book and I didn't have any information about it except for the back of the book. But the back was enough to catch me, I saw a couple of movies with "below-people" before and I was always fascinated by the idea, it felt really nice to go back to this in a frustrated and busy time like I have for a couple of weeks.

What is "below-people" you ask.... An urban legend found around homeless people who live in subway stations and tunnels inside them. 'Neverwhere' has a similar story too, only this time 'London Below' is another world from subway stations to sewers. In this London, some people open non-existing doors to go where ever they want, some people are living for centuries, time flies in another fashion and monsters wander in the deeps.

Before searching for information to write this post, I didn't even know that Neil Gaiman is the creator of 'Sandman', even though I'm not the biggest fan, I really love it. Also, this book is a novelization of a 6 episode mini-series for BBC realized in 1996 and the director and writer was Neil Gaiman. Later Gaiman expanded the story to write a novel and a comic-book. Also it's been staged in London and rumor has it that a film project is in preparation. But don't prejudge the book because it's a novelization, both in terms of story and writing style, it's a satisfying book for its readers.

The most interesting part of the book is of course the world it creates. Various objects and people from the beginning of time are falling from small creeks and holes from London. 'London Below' which grows for centuries is a magical world that people passing by with trains cannot grasp or see. The book which creates a totally different world also creates its magic with the characters. Lady Door who can open doors to everywhere she wish, The Angel Islington who was in charge of Atlantis, the charismatic underground dog Marquis de Carabas, one of the biggest treats of the 'London-Below' for centuries, the so-called burners of Rome instead of Nero; Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar....Also the thing that impress me the most is the odd hierarchical order that Gaiman creates, as you can see from the characters' names, this world also have counts, ladies, marquis... and rats are at the highest rank of all. The wise and strong rats are the animals (or people) that everyone respects and is afraid of.

You can always read this part as political of course, but overall the book is more of a fairytale with witty and subtle innuendos about the 'real' world, I think you can sense the vibe of the book more clearly when you know that Gaiman is also the writer of 'Stardust'.

Another fun part about the book is the tales about every meaningless station of London, like in 'Shepherd's Bush' real shepherds live a count really inhabits in 'Earl's Court'. This little jokes are a part of a well-thought world.

In conclusion, 'Newerwhere' is a book that you can read breathless and puts you in another world, it's certainly a book that fantasy-lovers have not to miss, especially if you liked ( and like still) fairy tales, the book is just for you....
