I referenced to Gregory Crewdson, the photographer of Twilight (not the film, don't get me wrong) before, and now is the time to take a closer look to his work in this week's 'Photography Fridays'.

1962 doğumlu Amerikalı fotoğrafçı, gençlik yıllarını New York'ta ünlenen power pop (wikipedia'ya göre punk rock, grubun kendisine göre power pop) grubu 'The Speedies'le geçirmiş, hatta hit parçalarının adı da 'Let Me Take Your Photo' imiş. ('Let Me Take Your Photo videosu: Crewdson en sağdaki kırmızı t-shirtlü gitarist)

American photographer born in 1962 spent his youth in a Power Pop band (punk&rock if you ask wikipedia, but the band puts it as Power Pop) 'The Speedies' which was very famous in the New York Scene, and their hit single is 'Let me Take Your Photo'. He, then studied photography in college, now even though his works exhibit in the best galleries in NY and he teaches at Yale, he still is the same punk kid. (He is the guitarist in red t-shirt in the video of 'Let Me Take Your Photo' at the most right part)

Fotoğraflarını hep gün doğumundan önce, alacakaranlıkta çeken Crewdson, Amerika banliyösünde sinematografik setler kurarak (daha doğrusu gerçek mekanlara objeler/araçlar ekleyerek demeliyim) ve alacakaranlığın ışığını, çevrenin yapay ışıklarını (sokak lambası vs.) abarttarak gergin bir ortam yaratıyor.

Crewdson always shoots his photos at twilight before dawn, puts mise-en-scene in the generic American suburbs and use artificial lights from the surroundings (street lamps and such) with the twilight to create an anxious mood.

When I took a photography critic and history class in Berlin, we spent the whole session in discussing this piece below. The photos have artificial or out of place objects that you cannot identify at first glance. This causes the anxiety in the viewer. If we may go with examples a little bit (yes, I'm in my academic mood this week):

We'll also look at the close-up to this photo, but doesn't it have a weird vibe at the first look? The first thing we grip is the lighting of the sky. At first, it's hard to figure out when the photo was taken; at twilight, or another part of the day when it is foggy. But the fact that the street lamps are lit makes us figure out that it's night, not day. Beyond from the sky, the main element that causes tension, is the fact that there is nobody around, even tough all the lamps of the stores are lit. This photo always makes me feel like, 5 minutes ago, the street was full of people, but the people suddenly disappeared (or maybe kidnapped by aliens?). This is the secret behind Crewdson's photos, with the mise-en-scene that he creates, there are many questions popping out in your mind, but the photo itself doesn't really answer them.

Let's have a closer look. The main object in the photo is the car parked in the middle of a large street, just at the center of the photo. You can't really tell just looking at the whole photo, but the driver door of the car is open and there is a woman sitting in the passenger seat. We cannot really tell her facial expression, but she is looking at the driver seat, like there is someone there. The light coming from the car also draw our attention as an artificial light source. If you pay attention, there are two lights coming from the car; the yellow light coming inside of the car, and the red light coming from the stop lights. This car that you don't fully notice at first glance (at least I didn't) is the element of tension in the photo.

Let's look to another example. This one seems to have a clearer story. A man is digging something in the middle of the forest at night. Or is it? If you look closely, you see that the man is about to open one of the luggages. Other suitcases are spread around him. Why do you think would he scatter the suitcases that he would bury so far from him? Maybe, he is just pull them out of the pit, so he doesn't bury things, but is looking for something. I also want to draw your attention to the strong blue light coming from behind. Gregory Crewdson uses this type of lighting a lot. Where do you think this light is coming from? What is the source? In cinema, the director must give the source of lights like that (artificial lights), otherwise they can draw the attention of the viewers and shatter the cinematic illusion that classic films (Hollywood and such) wants to create. This is why Gregory Crewdson is such a cinematographic photographer.

Sorry for the size of this photo, but you get the point I hope. There is a naked woman standing in a trailer parked in the garden of a house and a boy is looking to her. Let's try to write a story of this photo. Hard, isn't it? My favorite part of this photo is the reflection on the water at the lower section of the photo. I think that it's placed digitally, because the colors and shapes of the reflection is so intact, but I'm not sure.

His Twilight series, have more specific stories and we can figure out more easily why and how they create tension and anxiety. Let's begin:

Son fotoğraftaki ışık tam da size bahsettiğim şey işte. Hem yapay, hem de nereden geldiği belirsiz. Bana hep uzaylıları hatırlatıyor bu mavi renkte ışıklar.

The blue light in the last photo is just what I keep telling you about. It's both artificial and you cannot tell where it comes from. These blue lights always remind me of aliens, I tell you.

Ve Twilight serisinin en tırstığım fotoğrafı:

And the photo that scares me most from the Twilight series:

Last of all, despise the gorgeousness of the flowers, look at her expression, the fact that it's so absurd to have a flower patch inside a house and to the blue light. A last question: even if we consider the blue light coming from the front of the house from the right as moonlight (the moonlight cannot be this bright, but let's say that it is) what is the light coming from the left door? And if you pay attention, you can see that the light coming from the door is round, so it's coming from a direct source (lamp). I say aliens again as a person who spent her childhood with X-Files.

This post is very long and it's time for it to end. Last of all, as you can imagine, the photos all portray the artificialness of the American suburb, and even though it is obvious, they meant they meant to criticize the American life. Isn't it a wonderful way to criticize the American Dream?
