Well let's talk about 'Freedom' (Korkoro) now. You may know Tony Gatlif from his previous films like 'Transylvania' (I do at least), Gadjo Dilo or Exiles... I didn't think that Transylvania was all that great, but it was fun and has Asia Argento in it, so I liked it. But this time, Gatlif is more of a master in story-telling in his newest movie.

Also a French-Roman, Gatlif makes films about gypsies for 30 years and mostly try to tell the unknown story of 12 million Romanians killed in the Second World War. Even though 12 million Romanians were killed and the Nazis even took people from Greece, I didn't know about Roman people in the WW2 at all until I went to Auschwitz.

Film, 2.

The film is about a gypsy family who went to a small French village. The family and the conservative natives don't really get along, but with the helps of a nobleman; the vet of the village and the elementary school teacher, they try to found a home of their own. Like that's not enough trouble, French government bans the gypsies to live as nomads , so in a way, they have to imprisoned themselves in this little village. With the Nazi's arrival, the situation gets worse and worse.

Film is very entertaining, the ending is heart-breaking but not in an over-done way, music is of course fantastic, the places are beautiful, but most of all the dresses and hair of Romani women are very pretty. Even though sometimes it becomes so obvious that the director puts the half-crazy Talouche ( James Thiérrée) just to put a funny element in it, some of his scenes were very good and others very funny.

The think I can say about the film is that it's a very fun film to watch and tells this unknown fact of the WW2 without smothering the audience with history lessons. I watch so many films about Nazis, that now I really prefer the ones which tell small stories about the war...

Trailer:

A little break from the festival until Friday, I rest and meanwhile try to finish 'And Quiet Flows the Don's last volume (480 pages!) which I suppose to finish until the 28th for my book club. Friday, I have 'Women without Men' and 'Fobidilia' in the festival, and the Tchaikovsky concert at night. Full of art that is...
