This week I want to talk about the 'Freak Factory' Diane Arbus. She was born in 1923 into a Jewish family of 5th avenue shop owners. His father who as retired become a painter and mother were interested in photography, so Diane Arbus learned about photography at a very young age. Her photos of "freaks" (dwarves, giants, transvestites, circus people...) both went to the most important exhibits and raised a lot of bad critics. But her fame glowed in 1971 with her suicide. She suffered from severe episodes throughout her life like her mother and there is a well-known rumor that she photographed every minute of her suicide, but as the photos are absent, there is no way to proove it.
Fotoğraflarını hep siyah-beyaz ve yuvarlak kenarlı çekti, ilk zamanlarında yumuşak ışık onun imzasıydı, son zamanlarında ise daha çok zeka özürlü insanları değişik surat ifadeleri/ruh halleriyle çektiği serilerle uğraştı (altta 'Call sheet for The Boy with Grenade').
Her photos are always black&white with round edges, in her earlier period, she used soft ligths and in her latest years, she focused on series of different facial expressions and moods of mentaly incapable people (see below; 'Call Sheet for the Boy with Grenade')
There’s a quality of legend about freaks. Like a person in a fairy tale who stops you and demands that you answer a riddle. Most people go through life dreading they’ll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They’ve already passed their test in life. They’re aristocrats.

Bu arada, ben de fotoğrafları internette ararken öğrendim ki, 2003 yılında Arbus'u Nicole Kidman'ın oynadığı bir Diane Arbus hayat hikayesi filmi çıkmış, izlenmeli bence.
When I was looking for the photos online, I learned that there is also a film about Diane Arbus' life played by Nicole Kidman.
