Northanger Abbey

Jane Austen'ın 1798 yılında yazdığı, 1803 yılında sattığı halde yayıncının yanınlamaktan vazgeçtiği ve sonunda 1817 yılında basılan romanı 'Northanger Abbey', aslında dönemin gotik kitaplarının parodisi, ama Jane Austen tarzında. Rahatlıkla Jane Austen'ın en iyi kitabı değilse de, en eğlenceli kitabı diyebilirim.

Jane Austen's 'Northanger Abbey' that she wrote around 1798 and sold to a publisher in 1803, but got published only in 1817 (the publisher decided not to published and later sold to Austen family unaware that she is a well-known author) is a gothic novel parody, but with a Jane Austen twist. I can easily say that it's Jane Austen's funnest book, even though not the best.

Bu kitabın farklı olduğu bir diğer nokta ise baş karakteri. Austen zaten kendi bu kitabın karakterinin çok güzel ve çok akıllı bir kadın olmayacağını söylüyor. Eski bir 'Erkek Fatma' olan baş karakterimiz Catherine Morland, sıradan bir güzelliğe sahip (Jane Austen'ın deyimiyle 'almost pretty'), naifliğinden aptal görünen, bilgisiz ve tecrübesiz bir kızımız. Okuduğu gotik kitaplar hayal gücünü fazlasıyla besliyor ve hayatı o kitaplardaki gibi yaşamayı istiyor. Hayatı ve insanları ise hiç mi hiç tanımıyor, herkesi kendi gibi iyi niyetli sanıyor,bu da başına olmadık işler açıyor.

This book is different from other Austen's because of the heroine. Austen says herself that the heroine in this book is not the prettiest or the smartest of all. A former 'Town Boy' Christine Morland, by Jane Austen's description, "almost pretty", is naive on the verge of stupidity, ignorant and inexperienced. She is too fascinated by the gothic novels she read and started to see the life as one of them. She doesn't know the life or the people at all, thinks well about everyone she meets and this causes many problems.

Hikaye aslında çok klasik, 17 yaşındaki Catherine, aile dostlarıyla birlikte Bath'a gidiyor. Orada uzun bir süre kimseyi tanımadan dolandıktan sonra, aile dostları Bayan Allen'ın okul arkadaşının kızı ve sonradan anlayacağı üzere abisinin hayranı Isabella'ya tanışıyor. Bath'taki ilk balosunda tanıştığı Henry Tilney'e de aşık olunca klasik Austen romanının bütün öğeleri oluşuyor.

The story itself is very classical, Catherine of 17 year old goes to Bath with her family friends. After wandering alone without knowing anyone, she meets with Isabella who is the daughter of the family friend Mrs. Allen's schoolmate and his brother's future belle. Henry Tilney who she meets with in her first ball is the love interest and forms the elements of a classical Austen novel.

Jane Austen'ın bu kitaptaki üslubu, hiç olmadığı kadar refleksif (sanki çok anlamlı Türkçe çevirisi bu kelimenin: kendine göndermeli önerme-çüş kitap yazsaydınız bir sözcük için!), yazarlık hakkında, dönemin yazarları hakkındaki düşüncelerini daha da fazla romana yedirmiş. Gotik romanlara saygı gösterisi de denebilir bu kitap için, türü sevenler kaçırmasın! Bunun yanında bir de Austen'ın toplum eleştirisinin, yine ön planda olduğunu söyleyebilirim.

Jane Austen's style in this book is more reflexive than ever, about writing and authors of the era. We can call the book a hommage to gothic novels, and is perfect for the ones who love the genre. Plus, Austen's public critic is as strong as ever.

Eran'a daha önce Emma'yı önermiştim, bir erkeğin okuması için daha uygun diye, fikrimi değiştirdim, Northanger Abbey'i oku Eran!

I recommended to a friend 'Emma' as a book more suitable to male readers, but I changed my mind, 'Northanger Abbey' is definitely better in this aspect.

Lady Susan'ı da okuyunca, Jane Austen'ın romanlarını bitirmiş olacağım. Sevinsem mi, üzülsem mi bilemedim.

Just 'Lady Susan' is left from Jane Austen's entire library that I didn't read, I don't know if I should be happy or sad...
